Thursday, March 29, 2012. Time 6:30-8:30.
UI Stillinger Herbarium Keying Work Party: INPS Co-sponsor
Last summer the Stillinger Herbarium hosted the 4th annual Idaho Botanical Foray where we led a group of about 40 volunteers from Idaho and Washington on a 5-day camping and collecting trip to the foothills of the Seven Devils and Cuddy Mountains in East Central Idaho. The trip was a huge success, which means we have a large number of specimens to identify (ca. 650) and we need your help!
What: Foray Work Parties! At these work parties, participants will have the opportunity to work closely with experts at plant identification and build the skill set necessary to effectively use dichotomous keys and the herbarium collection to identify the collections made on the foray.
Where: Stillinger Herbarium, CNR room 22. We will have scopes set up and extra copies of Hitchcock and Cronquist - if you have your own H&C, bring it along.

THE WHITE PINE CHAPTER PRESENTS "THE YEAR OF THE PENSTEMON".
The Penstemons (or beardtongues) are among the most beautiful of western wildflowers. View
photos of some of Idaho's penstemons at
Idaho Mountain Wildflowers.
Penstemons do very well in the local garden as they are
somewhat drought tolerant.
There are over 50 species listed in the Flora of the Pacific Northwest,
many of which occur in Idaho. The Penstemon genus is considered by many to be a
taxonomically difficult group, but Pam
Brunsfeld, University of Idaho Stillinger Herbarium Manager and Curator, who considers Penstemon
her favorite genus, will conduct a workshop to assist us in learning to identify diagnostic features of the genus.
She will lead two follow-up field trips to view numerous species in the field. Please feel free to attend one,
two, or all of the events. While the workshop would best prepare us for field identification, just viewing
beautiful members of the genus is a reward in itself! Please see events on June 28, June 30 and August 4.

will be available for dissection with dissecting microscopes. Bring your copy of Hitchcock and Cronquist if you have one, but copies will be available for use.
