Speaker: Pam Brunsfeld, retired Stillinger Herbarium curator and Systematic Botany instructor
Program: Wildflower Superbloom
Location: 1912 Center, Great Room, 412 East Third St., Moscow, Idaho.

Pam will give a presentation on the “Wildflower Superbloom" that occurred in Southern California in late February and March 2017. Over 50 species covered the desert floor in Joshua Tree National Park and Anza Borrego State Park. Pam will share pictures of some of these species and landscape photos showing the extensive explosion of desert wildflowers she was privileged to see.

After five years of exceptional drought, desert landscapes across Southern California exploded with “superblooms” of wildflowers following the "just right" conditions including ample winter precipitation. According to local news reports, it was the most spectacular display some locations have seen in more than two decades.

Program: Island Biogeographics and Plants

Christine Parent will present a program on how colonization on islands sets the stage for the diversification of organisms, with a particular emphasis on patterns in plants. Dr. Parent is Assistant Professor, University of Idaho Biological Sciences. Her focus on ecology and evolutionary biology includes over 15 years of research in the Galapagos islands, with emphasis on invertebrates.

Speaker: Timothy D. Hatten. PhD
Program: Native bees, pollinators and a rare endemic plant (Silene spaldingii): Untangling a pollination-system mutualism within the Channeled Scablands Ecosystem
Location: 1912 Center, Great Room, 412 East Third St., Moscow, Idaho.

Tim Hatten, Scientist for Invertebrate Ecology, and adjunct faculty member, University of Idaho, will present results from an ongoing study of the Spalding's catchfly (Silene spaldingii) pollination system in the Channeled Scablands of eastern Washington. Results focus on: 1) the native bee community at Key Conservation Areas for S. spaldingii; 2) bee visitors to the plant and their foraging patterns; 3) canopy and flowering characteristics of the plant; 4) plant community characteristics of remnant grasslands where the plant occurs; and 5) influence of the plant community on bee visitation rates.

Program: Growing Camas
Its growth cycle, the fungi that associate with its root system, and the proper techniques for its restoration
Location: 1912 Center, Great Room, 412 East Third St., Moscow, Idaho.

Gretchen is concluding her Ph.D. studies at WSU this spring investigating the proper storage procedures to prevent fungal damage not only for camas, but also for other bulbs from onions to daffodils. She has received funding from the Washington Native Plant Society to support her research and has worked on camas restoration projects in Oregon.

Come early and bring a friend!
Plants are native mostly to the Palouse prairie or Moscow Mountain area. Once established they require minimal care. We will have a variety of perennials, annuals, some grasses, some shrubs and small trees. There will also be some woodland native plants. Come early for the best selection.

We will have members present to answer questions.

Saturday, June 2, 2018 Two field trips - one close to Moscow, the second above Lucile on the canyon breaks.
Field trip close to Moscow. Brenda Erhardt, leader. Latah Soil and Water Conservation District's 3rd annual star thistle weed pull will be on Gormsen Butte, a beautiful Palouse Prairie remnant. Field trip above Lucile. Mike Hays, leader. Mike has agreed to lead another crupina-pulling field trip to the elevations above Lucile. We will get to see some wonderful country and beautiful wildflowers on this hike, while we also pull any crupina we come across. This weed pulling helps the Forest Service keep crupina from invading a beautiful grassland ecosystem that includes the rare Spalding's catchfly, Silene spaldingii This area is very species rich.

The numbers of participants will be limited to 20 people or units based on first signed up basis. There will be a $5.00 charge per unit to help defray the cost of materials and lunch. (One unit is either one adult or one adult with a child. Only one person in a “unit” would actually build while the other would watch and learn.)

All members should consider going to the Annual Meeting as Calypso chapter has planned an exciting program of field trips and a talk by Jack Nesbit on John Leiberg, the Swedish-American Botanical Collector. Sunday, July 29 through August 3, 2018. White Pine Chapter is co-operating with the Wallow-Whitman National Forest to set up climate change plots on Eagle Cap Wilderness, Mt. Howard area.

GLORIA Field Volunteers: The plan is for everyone to make their way to Joseph, Oregon, by the afternoon of July 29 where we'll have a shuttle up to Mt. Howard because there is limited space for vehicles. Camping will be dispersed, in a somewhat flat sagebrush meadow so bring your fattest ground pad! We will have access to outhouses. Everyone is responsible for their own camping gear, food and beverages (including water). We hope to get all the fieldwork done in 3 days (Tuesday-Thursday) weather permitting. But we may need to work through Friday. We primarily need botanists (plant ID) but there is non-botany support work to do as well (setting up plots, recording, taking pictures, etc). Email Upekala Wijaratne, ucwijayratne@fs.fed.us, Ecologist with the Malheur, Umatilla and Wallowa-Whitman National Forest if you wish to learn more about volunteering for this project.

Program: Nez Perce Tribe's Rare Plant Conservation Program
Location: 1912 Center, Great Room, 412 East Third St., Moscow, Idaho.

Dr. Angela Sondenaa, White Pine Chapter member, will present a program on the Nez Perce Tribe's rare plant and prairie conservation work. She will discuss the results of extensive inventories completed on the reservation, provide the results of reproductive ecology and pollinator research on specific species, explain the Tribe's prairie inventory and assessment, and update us on the conservation of Silene spaldingii in Joseph Creek.

Location: Mary McCroskey State Park

Meet at Rosauer's Parking Lot at 10 am to arrange carpooling. We will proceed to Skyline Drive (MP 371) on Highway 95 and turn left to access McCroskey State Park. There will be some stops along Skyline Drive to botanize. We will then proceed to the covered shelter, approximately 6.4 miles, where we will have lunch and meeting.

Speaker: Dr. Tanya Cheeke, Assistant Professor, Microbial Ecology, Washington State University
Program: Mycorrhizal Fungus Transplants Can Help Restore Prairies
Location: 1912 Center, Great Room, 412 East Third St., Moscow, Idaho.

Tanya Cheeke will be speaking on transplanting mycorrhizal fungus to help restore prairie ecosystem. She has researched the role of mycorrhizal transplants in successfully restoring tall grass prairie in Kansas. Native plant species are often more dependent on mycorrhizal fungi than are invasive species. When the fungi are disturbed, mycorrhizal-dependent native plants do not compete well with invasive species. She and her team are now testing the mycorrhizal response in Palouse Prairie restoration. This program is jointly sponsored by the White Pine Chapter of INPS and the Palouse Prairie Foundation.
